From a Brand Book to a UI Kit

Turn brand guidelines into design tokens and UI components the engineering team can ship on marketing and product screens.

A brand book that lives only in a PDF does not survive a product sprint. The creative director's job is to turn color, type, and tone into a system developers can apply without redrawing every screen.

Tokens before pages

Start with color, type scale, spacing, and radius as named tokens, not one-off hex values. When the same token drives the marketing site and the product, a brand update is one change, not a hunt through mockups.

Components that match the brand

Buttons, cards, and forms should look like the brand without custom CSS on every page. Document hover, focus, error, and disabled states so the kit covers real UI, not only the hero.

Handoff the team can ship

Pair each component with a short usage note: when to use it, when not to, and how content sits inside. Engineers implement faster when the spec names the token instead of a cropped screenshot.

Key takeaways

  • Name color, type, and spacing as tokens before drawing pages.
  • Document component states, not only the hero frame.
  • Handoff specs should name tokens, not cropped screenshots.
